Moth

"An enormous moth visited me the other day. It was as big as my palm, with a wing span of about 10cm. You know, the Chinese say when a moth or butterfly visits, it’s a spirit that has come back. "

"Whatever it may be, this moth was big. It was brown, with a stripe of white running vertically down the wings. It was old. You could tell, its wings were starting to disintegrate. The ends of it were broken, torn up and unequal. The colour was starting to fade to. Funny how its tiny body was only 3cm long. Yet it had such large wings."

-- Extracted from "Act II" from Khang Chiang's blog.

I've seen it before.

Not once, but FOUR times...

Yes, this enormous brown moth with a 10 cm wingspan, and a stripe of white running down.

I've seen it twice at the staircase leading to my classroom, once at the toilet in my school, and once on the ceiling of the corridor outside my flat.

It seems to be stalking me.

It seems to me that it has some message to convey to me.

Its ominous presence is sending chills and shivers down my spine, making me cringe whenever it appears within my sight.

I am not making a mountain out of a molehill. But, imagine a moth following you wherever you go, won't your goosebumps raise, even at the thought of it? Well, unless that moth is your pet that you raised... but that's besides the point.

I feel threatened. I feel endangered.

I am afraid.

Khang Chiang claims that a spirit is visiting.

Is that something good or bad? I dont know.

What does this moth symbolise? Is the moth of any significance for appearing in my sight?

And what spirit is that? Like Khang Chiang, I have not attended any funerals lately. My last one was nearly 10 years ago.

Most importantly, how will this moth affect me? What will happen to me?

I don't have the answers. I am puzzled. I am baffled.

I fear, because I don't know. I fear the unknown.

Thus far, nothing auspicious or ill-omened has taken place.

Maybe I am thinking too much.

Since both Khang Chiang and I had seen this moth recently, I presume that there is this sudden population boom of this species of moth and that such moths are now flying everywhere.

I hope so.
