Memories of my Secondary 4 Life (Part 1)

Jie Xun! Big Head! 大头!!!The son of the vice-president of CREATIVE. Don't play play... (It's like there are 几十个 vice president in the organisation...) Announcement: JIE XUN IS MINE. THOU SHALT NEVER GET HIM. $_$ I am eyeing his fortune... :P

Scheming! Kee-heng!!! Look at his flawless complexion, Ming Wei, you ought to learn something from him. Apparently sitting with him for the entire year and doing tonns of projects with him doesn't help...

STONE!!! You seriously need TummiTrim (Spokesperson: Michelle Chong), Extrim (Spokespersons: Zoe Tay, and we-were-once-fat-husband-and-wife) and Xando (Spokesperson: Fann Wong)

KEYWORD: "AND". Which means you need all three of them to get rid of that obnoxious tummy of yours. No, 2000 sit-ups a day doesnt help so stop disillusioning yourself. Neither would stoning the whole day long work.

Eh... no nickname for you? You are 16 years-old and you carry both the X and the Y chromosome, so stop acting cute in front of the camera!!! If you love being on screen so much, there's Star Idol and Project Superstar. Rest assure that I won't vote for you.

IDEAS In Action 2005 at Singapore EXPO. Here's our booth. I handmade all the decorations! Praise me and my beautiful artwork now.

Kawaii-desu ne! FYI, the title on that huge whale-like creature says, "The Effect of Traditional Chinese Herbs on Embryonic Development in Zebrafish". Cool title, isn't it? :p

That's our booth for the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair 2005 held at the Singapore Science Centre......

and for our wonderful project that aims to save lives and create miracles... we won the Silver award! WOOHOO!!! Okay, let's be realistic, what noble things can a high school project do to benefit Mankind? Nothing, except that we made our school lives a better one by gaining credit points from this project so that we need not work so hard for Final Examinations...

Help

Man is indeed a complex creature. We just like to contradict and conflict with ourselves.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Yes, arguably. This statement seems watertight in theory; but in practice, it is actually very much the opposite case, and the saying "too many cooks spoil the broth" comes into place.

No man is an island. We are all interdependent of each other. At some point in our life, we would certainly need to rely on another person's help. As much as we would wish those around us to lend us a helping hand in times of crisis, too much of a help provided is, at the same time, not greatly appreciated at all by us on the receiving end.

A case in point to illustrate my point would be what had happened today in school. I was busy recording my classmates' marks for the two piece of Chinese worksheets that my Chinese teacher had assigned us to do. Despite her clear instruction to the class to indicate their marks on top of their script, many failed to do so. As a result, I had to manually calculate the scores before recording. Just to digress a bit, I have nothing against those who simply could not follow orders but I would greatly appreciate if they had had the required neurones in their brain to performed as instructed.

Anyways, my Chinese teacher saw the "confusion" that I had to endure and lectured the class for not being considerate enough -- to indicate their score clearly and to help me to sort things out.

Her lecture was a successful one. Two of them came over and helped me to read out the scores of those who had indicated it on their script so that I can focussed on just recording their scores. I appreciate this help provided. But things get out of hand when both of them kept telling me scores of different students at the same time. That confused my train of thoughts a bit. When it comes to averaging the scores, it was, to be honest, a little irritating when I am currently doing my calculation in my head while hearing another person orally performing the calculation out loud. Same applies when I was told by the teacher to identify who are the top 10 performers for this piece of work.

I mean, my heart was filled with gratitude when they offered their help (even though it was only after my teacher's lecture), but when they extend their help too much, or when they helped me when I don't really need it (like performing simple calculations), I found their help redundant. I know I sound ungrateful, but seriously, when people begin to help you even though you can really manage on your own, you will be somewhat annoyed by their helpfulness.

Self-esteem? Perhaps that's the case.

So next time when you are thinking of lending a helping hand, do pause for a moment and think about whether the other party on the receiving end truly needs the help or not lest you end up destroying their self-esteem or give others a wrong impression that you are just simply an annoying hypocrite.

JC Next Year

I am determined to take the following subjects for A Levels:

1. Maths

2. Chemistry

3. Economics

4. Chinese Language and Literature (LEP)

So, most likely I won't be able to be classmates again with almost all of my current classmates. Which is somewhat good, not that I will particularly miss anyone from the class. Nothing against them, just that they can rest assured that I won't miss them.

Besides, I am also certain what CCAs I am going to take up in JC next year:

1. Chinese Society (中文学会)

And, if I choose LEP, I will automatically become a member of the LEP Society (语特学会), which has been considered as an official CCA. So I will have 2 CCAs already... but I am still thinking of joining the Students' Council though...

Extravagance

I just committed two of the Seven Deadly Sins over the weekend, namely: Gluttony and Greed
Extracted from The Seven Deadly Sins Revealed:

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

So, I can foresee myself landing in Hades for those undesirable acts that I had committed. In order for my soul to be liberated and go to heaven after I die, I must say the magical word.

Amen.

Anyways, here's a timeline of what had happened to me over the weekend.

Thursday, 13th October 2005:

Watched "The Myth", starring Jackie Chan, with my mum (Movie ticket: SGD$8.00)

Dinner at Swenson's at Northpoint's outlet(Approximately SGD$20.00)
The service I received was lukewarm despite the fact that there wasn't many customers at that time. The waitress does not seem to be enthusiastic with her job. But the cashier was cheery though. Seems that Swenson's policy is money-minded-inclined. I'll smile only when you give me money.

Bought 2 CDs. James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" and Relax One 轻松玩《我要轻松玩》(Total: SGD$38.80)

Saturday, 15th October 2005:

Lunch at Ding Tai Fung (鼎泰丰)restaurant, The Paragon outlet

Xiao Long Baos!! The restaurant claims to have 18 folds on each bun. I counted and they lied! There were at least 21 folds on a bun that I randomly picked to test the reliability of the restaurant's bold claim. And I proved them wrong. ;)

Look at the Xiao Long bao in close-up! The soup that is enclosed within the parameters of the skin is so sweet!

Har Gow! I can't recall how the restaurant address them on the menu. But they are the same thing afterall.

Zoom-in to the har gow. Mouth-watering.

Fried ribs. No, they aren't burnt, just that my camera pre-installed on my phone has bad resolution and does not do justice to the actual thing. The meat is very tender and the meat simply melts in your mouth.

Look at the generous serving of prawns they have on a plate of fried rice. An ordinary dish, but they choose to make it extraordinary. A plus point for the dish is the freshness of every prawn lie buried in the rice. The prawns are succulent and they literally bounce on your taste buds. They have this "springy" texture and they just go "bo-ing, bo-ing" in your mouth, bouncing up and down like ping-pong balls. Not forgetting to mention the generous serving of egg as well.

Siew Mai! 烧卖!Yes, they are indeed Siew Mai so stopping rubbing your eyes lest your cornea falls out from your eye. The siew mais look cute, don't they?

An aerial view of siew mai. The orange thinggy is the prawn.

Voila! Have the prawn removed and this is what you would see!

Unfortunately, my camera phone didn't do much justice to all the food I had for lunch, so they may appear rather unappealing on screen. SO, just look at the photos and imagine them to be 237146989X better and you would more and less have an idea of how they would taste.

The restaurant had great service as well. Friendly waitress who would tell you if you use your UOB credit card, you would be entitled to a free bowl of Spicy and Sour Soup(酸辣汤), which unlike the name suggests, is neither spicy nor sour. A great let-down though. The food server would come up to your table with your food and they would appear in gloves and mask. For hygiene purposes apparently.

(Average cost per person: SGD$18.00)

After lunch, I went shopping with my parents and bought myself 4 pieces of new clothes. 3 from Topshop, 1 from Giordano. (Total cost: SGD $101)

Sunday, 16th October 2005:

Breakfast at Burger King. Enormous Omelette Sandwich, can't remember the exact name. SGD $5.70

I SPENT A GRAND TOTAL OF SGD$191.50 OVER THE WEEKEND!!

SINNED!

Anyways, here's a quick sum-up of all the restaurant and boutiques I visited.

Swenson's (Northpoint outlet):

Service: Waiters and waitresses did not seem to take pride in their work. But the cashier seems excited about collecting money. Overall: 6.5/10

Price: Swenson's is getting pricier. They would secretly change the appearance of the menu and sneakily edit the price tag. Overall: $$$$$$

Ding Tai Fung (The Paragon outlet):

Service: Good. Until when we decided to settle our bill, and here comes a muddle-headed waitress. She didn't even give my father a pen for him to sign on the receipt when he chose to settle the payment using credit card. Overall: 8/10

Price: Not as expensive as I had always assumed. Overall: $$$$

Giordano (Centrepoint's outlet):

Service: The moment I stepped in they would greet me with a genuine smile hung on their lips and a warm "hello". After I had tried on a piece of clothes, the salesgirl politely asked me if the clothes fit. I can't remember everything in detail, but all I know is I had received a good service. Overall: 9/10

Topshop (Wistma Atria's basement outlet):

Service: The salesman would tell me the promotion the shop is currently having, that is, $10 for the second tee. I was rather fickle-minded at that time, and was torn between choosing red or brown for one of the tee that I had fancied on. I kept troubling the salesman as I kept requesting to look at the designs of many tees that are laid nicely-folded on the shelves. But, he still remained very polite and patient. Overall: 9/10

Bossini (Centrepoint's outlet):

Service: Like the Giordano staff, they greeted me with a warm welcome the moment I stepped in and even though I didn't purchase anything from them, they still said, "Goodbye" to me. With a smile. 9/10 for their politeness.

Junichiro Koizumi (小泉纯一郎) & Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社)

What has the Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi and the Yasukuni Shrine, the war shrine located in the heart of Tokyo that Koizumi has repeatedly visit, got to do with my blog?

Stay tuned.

Answer to PSLE Math Question

Looks like everyone is curious about the correct answer to the following question:

A man went down a flight of stairs by walking a few steps and running 14 steps, taking a total of 41s. He repeated this by walking a few steps and running 6 steps, taking 65s to do so. What would be time taken if he only walked down the flight of stairs?

to be honest, I was inititally stumped by the question as well. But i still manage to figure it out anyways. :p Looks like my A* grade for my PSLE MAth was deserving!

The trick is: think simple, guys!

Walk few steps + run 14 steps = 41 seconds

Walk few steps + run 6 steps = 65 seconds

Therefore, a 8 step difference results in a difference of 65 - 41 seconds = 24 seconds

8 steps = 24 seconds

1 step = 3 seconds,

which means, for every step you walk, you will take 3 extra seconds than that if you run.

Hence, if the boy WALKS DOWN THE WHOLE FLIGHT OF STEPS:

65 seconds + (6 X 3 seconds)
= 65 + 18
= 83 seconds

CHECK ANSWER:

1 step = 3 seconds
14 steps = 41 seconds
13 steps = 44 seconds
12 steps = 47 seconds
11 steps = 50 seconds
10 steps = 53s
9 steps = 56s
8 steps = 59s
7 steps = 62s
6 steps = 65s
5 steps = 68s
4 steps = 71s
3 steps = 74s
2 steps = 77s
1 step = 80s
0 steps / Walk down the whole thing = 83s

You DO NOT need to know the total number of steps to do this question! :)

Selfish Jerk

The title is refering to myself.

I only care about what vitamins and minerals my body should take in, how my eye works and how my heart does the pumping of the blood.

Why the heck should I care about transpiration pull and photosynthesis in plants?

I am a homo sapien, not a walking orchid or rain tree.

I don't have chlorophyll in my veins.

Biology Exam in 12 hours time.

And I still have not gone through all my notes on plants.

Thank you for providing us with oxygen. But no thanks, I don't give a damn about your anatomy.
